Just hours after former Trinamool Congress MP Partha Bhowmik met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president Nitin Nabin in New Delhi, posters branding him a “traitor” surfaced across his own Barrackpur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal, triggering a fresh political controversy. The timing of the posters has drawn attention in political circles, as they appeared on the same day that several Trinamool Congress defectors from the Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI) camp held meetings with the BJP's top leadership in the national capital. Read Full Story A prominent figure in Bengal politics for nearly 15 years, Bhowmik served as a three-time Trinamool Congress MLA from Naihati between 2011 and 2021.
He later won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Barrackpur on a Trinamool Congress ticket. However, after the Trinamool Congress suffered a major setback in the 2026 elections, Bhowmik quit the party and joined the newly formed NCPI. He also distanced himself from the INDIA bloc and extended support to the BJP. On Wednesday, Bhowmik attended meetings with Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah in Delhi. Soon after photographs of the meetings began circulating widely on social media, posters carrying his photograph appeared in Barrackpur with the message: “Beware of this traitor.” The posters, put up in the name of the “Citizens of Barrackpur Lok Sabha Constituency,” prominently feature Bhowmik’s image and accuse him of betrayal, intensifying the political battle over his switch from the Trinamool Congress.
Reacting to the development, Amit Gupta, the defeated Trinamool Congress candidate from the Bhatpara Assembly constituency, said Bhowmik's decision to leave the party had angered many voters. “Partha Bhowmik is no longer with the Trinamool Congress. That is why he is being called a traitor. He has not only betrayed Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, but also the more than five lakh voters who elected him in the 2024 elections. Perhaps some of them were hurt by his actions, and they may have put up these posters,” Gupta said. The BJP, however, dismissed the episode as part of a political culture fostered under Trinamool rule.
“The culture of putting up posters has been prevalent since the Trinamool Congress came to power. Earlier too, posters used to be put up secretly, and the same thing is happening now. But I would say that those who put up this poster should come forward and speak openly. Those who have allegedly been betrayed should come out in the open and say so publicly,” Barrackpur BJP leader Priyangu Pandey said. Ends
