(Representational image: Canva) In a major strategic and cartographic move, the Government of India, in direct consultation with the Arunachal Pradesh state government, has officially identified and standardised twenty-seven prominent places and geographical features on the authoritative maps of the Survey of India. This systematic naming exercise aims to promote accurate geographical recognition, reinforce administrative clarity, and bolster public awareness regarding key frontier zones along India’s north-eastern border. Arunachal Pradesh shares international borders with three countries: China (to the north and northeast via Tibet), Bhutan (to the west), and Myanmar (to the east and southeast).
Reinforcing Sovereignty Along the Border The formal integration of these standardised names on official Survey of India maps marks a decisive response to recurring regional naming controversies. For years, external powers have attempted to unilaterally rename geographical features, villages, and passes in Arunachal Pradesh to assert spurious territorial claims. By legally standardising Indigenous, historical, and strategic names within the national mapping framework, New Delhi firmly cements its sovereign cartographic footprint. The initiative ensures that educational resources, government records, public communications, and international cartographic references reflect official Indian nomenclature. Historic Passes, Lakes, and Sacred Sites Standardised The twenty-seven identified features encompass a diverse mix of strategic mountain passes, historic land areas, water bodies, and prominent memorials scattered across the state’s frontier districts. Among the notable high-altitude passes (La) standardised under the new mapping protocol are Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La, and Thag La: Critical mountain passes along key high-altitude transit corridors. Sambho Sarovar: A prominent high-altitude lake now formally designated on top-tier national maps.
