Various women’s organisations under the banner of ‘ Coalition for Women’s Reservation’ on Friday (August 7, 2026) staged a demonstration in the national capital demanding the unconditional implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill during the current Monsoon session of Parliament. Women from various parts of Delhi and neighbouring States gathered in large numbers for the protest, demanding that the Women’s Reservation Bill be implemented without conditions attached to it. The Constitution (106th Amendment) Bill, popularly known as the Women’s Reservation Bill or the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, was passed in September 2023.

The law stipulates that 33% reservation for women will come into effect only after the first census conducted following the commencement of the Act and the subsequent delimitation exercise, with implementation from the election held after that process is completed. The NDA government is currently holding talks with various Opposition parties for a consensus on the passage of the Delimitation Bill. Addressing the protest, All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) national secretary Shweta Raj highlighted a stark contradiction as on one hand, a large number of women have had their names removed from the electoral rolls, while on the other, the BJP-led government is stalling the path for granting 33% reservation to women.

“The BJP government aims to foster communal polarisation across the country by linking the Women’s Reservation Bill to delimitation; the elections in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir are recent examples of this,” she said according to a statement.

At this juncture, there is a need for the entire country to unite and demand the unconditional implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill, and for it to be enacted during this Monsoon session of Parliament itself, the statement added.
