A 28-year-old Indian Army jawan has been arrested for allegedly strangling his seven-month-pregnant wife to death at his home in Maharashtra's Washim district, police said. The accused, identified as Dnyaneshwar Madne, serves with the Army's 6 Maratha Battalion. Following a complaint by the victim's family, cops registered a murder case against the jawan and his parents. According to the victim's brother, Rahul Mane, the accused called the family around 3 pm on Thursday, claiming that his wife, Dipali, had fallen at home and had been admitted to a hospital.
Dipali's family, who live in Burhanpur district of neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, rushed to Washim and reached around 7 pm. Investigators suspect that an argument broke out between the couple, during which the jawan allegedly strangled his wife. He then allegedly transported her in an ambulance to a private hospital. However, doctors there reportedly referred the case to a government hospital. On examining the woman, doctors at the government facility suspected foul play and immediately alerted the police.
FAMILY ALLEGES EXTRA-MARITAL AFFAIR The victim's brother alleged that the accused was involved in an extra-marital relationship and had been harassing his sister over the issue for some time. He claimed that the dispute had escalated months ago, prompting both families to hold a meeting in an attempt to resolve the matter. Although the issue was settled at the time, the harassment allegedly continued. POLICE SAY NECK MARKS RAISED SUSPICION Senior police officer Manish Thakre said the police received a memo from the government hospital informing them that a woman's body had been brought in an ambulance.
"When our team reached the hospital, it was apparent that something was wrong. There were visible injury marks on the woman's neck," the officer said. Based on the complaint lodged by the victim's brother, police registered a case of murder against the Army jawan and his parents. The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
