Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice K.N. Phaneendra paid a surprise visit to the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Government Post-Matric Boys’ Hostel at Surya Nagar in Gadag on Friday (August 7) and expressed serious concern over the poor maintenance and inadequate facilities at the hostel. During the inspection, Justice Phaneendra visited the hostel’s food storage room and examined the quality of food grains and the drinking water arrangements. He raised objections over the condition of the facilities and observed that the hostel was not being maintained properly.
He expressed dissatisfaction over the state of students’ rooms and remarked that the officials concerned appeared to have failed to conduct regular inspections of the hostel. He directed the authorities to immediately undertake cleaning of the premises and carry out necessary repairs at the hostel building and submit a compliance report. Justice Phaneendra also instructed officials to have the hostel’s water tested to ascertain whether it was fit for drinking and other domestic use, and to submit the test report.
He sought information regarding the shifting of hostel assets, including computers and beds, to another hostel. He also inspected the toilets and water storage tanks and directed the authorities to ensure that they were cleaned and maintained regularly. Later, he interacted with the hostel residents and sought feedback on the problems they faced. The students complained that the hostel superintendent was not responding adequately to their grievances.
They also highlighted issues relating to the quality of food, availability of safe drinking water, relocation of computers, lack of library facilities, poor sanitation, and the unhygienic condition of the hostel premises. He was accompanied by senior officials during the inspection.
