The Hakki Pikki community of Angadihalli in Belur taluk, Hassan, has appealed to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to help bring back a woman from the village who fell ill during a visit to the Ivory Coast. A group of villagers met senior officers of the Hassan district administration on Friday and submitted a plea addressed to the Chief Minister.
They said Somu and Jyothi, a Hakki Pikki couple from Angadihalli, had travelled to the Ivory Coast four months ago to sell plant extracts. Jyothi, 46, was admitted to a hospital in Abidjan after she complained of high fever and later slipped into a coma.
Her husband, Somu, said he was finding it difficult to pay the medical bills and arrange her return to India, and had appealed to relatives at home for help. R. Punith Kumar, president of the Karnataka Hakki-Pikki Budakattu Sanghatane, urged the Chief Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs to help bring her back.
Many people from the Hakki Pikki community, a nomadic tribal group, travel to different countries to sell plant extracts believed to have medicinal value.
