The Union government has approved the establishment of 14 new day-care cancer centres in Andhra Pradesh as part of its nationwide initiative to expand access to cancer treatment facilities at the district level. Replying to the question raised by Vijayawada MP Kesineni Chinni in the Lok Sabha, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda said the Centre proposed to establish day-care cancer centres across district hospitals over three years, in line with the announcement made in the 2025–26 Union Budget.
Nadda informed the House that 524 such centres were currently functioning across the country. He said the Centre had so far approved 313 new centres under the programme and would consider additional proposals submitted by States and Union Territories based on local requirements. For Andhra Pradesh, the Centre sanctioned 14 new facilities during the 2025–26 Financial Year. The Union government allocated ₹2.40 crore for the establishment of each centre and ₹1.49 crore annually for operational expenses from the second year onwards.
The Minister said that 23 day-care cancer centres were already functioning in the State. The programme was being implemented under the Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD), with the State governments expected to identify requirements on the basis of gap analyses and submit proposals accordingly. Chinni said the establishment of additional centres would significantly improve access to cancer treatment by enabling patients to receive care closer to their homes, thereby reducing the need to travel long distances for treatment.
He also said that efforts would continue to secure approval for additional centres in the areas where demand for cancer care services remains high.
