The man took inspiration from 'The Staircase' series A 62-year-old software consultant has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife at their East Delhi home after drawing inspiration from the HBO true crime series The Staircase, police said. Investigators claimed the accused attempted to destroy the murder weapon and mislead the probe by following a strategy similar to the one shown in the series. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, allegedly killed his wife, Komal Singh, on July 30 while they were alone at home. Police said the couple had been involved in frequent disputes over a property issue for several months. Victim Was Attacked Inside Her Home According to police cited by NDTV, the incident took place around 12:45 pm. Komal was drying clothes on the balcony when Kamal allegedly struck her on the head from behind with a sword.
The first blow failed to knock her unconscious. She screamed and ran towards the kitchen in an attempt to save herself. Police said Kamal dragged her by the hair into the living room and stabbed her multiple times with a pair of scissors. Officials said neighbours reportedly heard Komal’s screams, but no one stepped in. Kamal’s father is also said to have asked his wife to check what had happened, but she allegedly told him not to interfere. Accused Tried To Destroy Evidence After the murder, Kamal allegedly packed the blood-stained clothes and the sword into a bag before taking a shower. He then left the house on his scooter and threw away the bag containing the sword while on the way, police said. Investigators said the accused also withdrew nearly Rs 7 lakh from two bank accounts and took another Rs 5 lakh kept in his wife’s room. By the time he fled, he was carrying around Rs 12.75 lakh in cash. Later that evening, the couple’s 26-year-old son, Gaurav Singh, returned home after unsuccessfully trying to contact his mother several times. Around 9:15 pm, he found her lying in a pool of blood.
Police recovered the scissors used in the attack from the scene, but the sword was missing. Three-Day Manhunt Ended In Mathura With Kamal missing, police began tracking him through CCTV footage, electronic evidence and technical surveillance. Officials said Kamal initially travelled towards Gorakhpur after switching on his mobile phone, leading investigators to suspect he was trying to flee to Nepal. He later switched off his phone and changed direction towards Mathura in an alleged attempt to mislead the investigation. After a three-day search, Delhi Police arrested him near Mathura railway station. His scooter and the entire cash amount were recovered during the operation. ‘The Staircase’ Inspired Escape Plan During questioning, Kamal allegedly admitted that he had planned to dispose of the murder weapon after watching the HBO series The Staircase. Police said he believed destroying the weapon would weaken the evidence against him. Officials also said he was planning to escape to Nepal. Marriage Had Been Under Strain Police said the couple’s relationship had deteriorated over the past year. During a visit to Mumbai, Kamal had reportedly developed a close relationship with another woman, which further strained the marriage. The couple continued to live under the same roof but maintained separate electricity bills, reflecting the distance in their relationship.
