The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday responded to recent remarks by Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who claimed that “Bangladesh has become another Pakistan on India’s eastern side" due to the growing influence of Islamabad’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and terrorism.
Addressing reporters during a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains vigilant and continuously monitors developments in its neighbourhood from a security perspective. “We keep a close watch on activities in our region and the neighborhood. We monitor the situation from a defense perspective and take appropriate measures," the MEA Spokesperson said. What Hasina’s Son Claimed? Sajeeb made the statement ahead of Hasina’s virtual address at an event organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club (FCC) of South Asia in New Delhi on Wednesday. Speaking about India’s security, he had said, “What should concern India most is that Bangladesh has become another Pakistan on India’s eastern front. You have another Pakistan today on your eastern front." He further alleged, “Foreign intelligence service, especially ISI [Inter-Services Intelligence], has an open hand." Sheikh Hasina’s Virtual Address Hasina has been staying in India since she was removed from office on August 5, 2024, after a student-led uprising in Bangladesh.
Following her ouster, Muhammad Yunus assumed charge as Chief Adviser of the interim government, which oversaw the country’s transition until elections were held in February this year. Meanwhile, the MEA clarified that the Indian government had no role in organising Hasina’s virtual address. “The interaction you refer to is being organised by a private media entity. The government has no involvement whatsoever in it. Neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum," Jaiswal said during Thursday’s regular media briefing.
