A birthday celebration at a resort in Uttarakhand's Ramnagar turned into a medical emergency after several members of a Ghaziabad family fell ill shortly after consuming a cake. Food safety officials and the police have launched separate investigations into the incident. The incident took place at a resort in Dhikuli, where the family had gathered to celebrate a birthday. According to the complainants, several guests, including children, began vomiting soon after eating the cake, prompting panic among those present.
Read Full Story The affected family alleged that the cake contained mould and insects. They further claimed that despite making two calls to the police emergency helpline (112) during the night, no police team reached the spot. The family later submitted a written complaint at the local police station. Following the complaint, officials from the Food Safety Department visited the resort and collected samples of the cake as well as other food items served during the celebration. The samples have been sent for laboratory analysis to determine whether the food was contaminated.
Police have also initiated an inquiry based on the complaint and said further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation. The resort management, meanwhile, denied preparing the cake in-house and said it had been procured from an external vendor. It added that it was cooperating fully with the authorities and was conducting its own enquiry into the matter. Officials said any further legal or administrative action would be taken after the laboratory reports and the findings of the ongoing investigation are received.
The incident triggered memories of another case of food poisoning in which nearly 150 students fell ill in Uttarakhand’s Pant Nagar. In June, the students consumed a special menu, featuring paneer and butter chicken at the hostel mess of the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. However, they suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea soon after the incident. Ends
