Chaliha pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament till now, beating top seed and World No. 22 Hina Akechi of Japan 20-22, 21-15, 21-19 in a thrilling quarterfinal clash at the Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium. The win also helped Ashmita avenge a loss in their only previous meeting at the Malaysia Super 100 last year. Rakshitha, meanwhile, fought back from a game behind to stun third seed and compatriot Tanvi Sharma 18-21, 21-19, 21-18 in a gruelling contest that lasted more than an hour.

It marked her fourth win against Tanvi, who had won her maiden BWF title at the Taipei Open last week. But India’s Krishna Prasad Garaga and Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy were knocked out after going down 7-21, 8-21 to Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong and Soh Wooi Yik. Ashmita vs Hina In a contest between two southpaws, Hina raced to a 7-5 lead before Ashmita fought back to level the score at 7-all. Both shuttlers used sharp-angled returns to force each other into the corners, but a few unforced errors from Ashmita permitted the Japanese shuttler to take an 11-9 lead into the mid-game interval. Ashmita remained in the hunt, drawing level at 12-all and 15-all before taking a 17-15 and then an 18-16 lead. She earned a game point at 20-19 after Hina sent one into the net, but was unable to capitalise on the chance. Hina then drew level before Ashmita hit wide, permitting the Japanese to pocket the opening game with a cross-court winner. Ashmita made a strong comeback after the change of ends.

With the scores level at 7-all, she produced a si point burst to open up a 13-7 advantage. Despite Hina narrowing the gap to 14-16, Ashmita held her nerve and won five of the next six points to take the match into a decider. The decider followed a similar script, with Ashmita storming to a 9-3 lead before heading into the interval with an 11-9 advantage. She extended her lead to 18-11, but Hina fought back well, stringing together six successive points to reduce the deficit to 17-18. Ashmita, however, held her nerve in the closing stages to seal a memorable win. Rakshitha vs Tanvi Rakshitha made a bright start to the opening game, building a 13-8 lead, but Tanvi responded with a superb fightback. The third seed won eight of the next nine points to turn the score around from 8-13 to 16-14 before going on to seal the game. The second game was another tight contest, with Rakshitha carrying a slender two-point lead into the mid-game interval. She then bagged two game points after Tanvi committed an error at the net.
