Heavy rainfall continued to batter several parts of Kerala on Friday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its weather warnings for the state. According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod have been placed under a red alert for August 7, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall.
An orange alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki, where very heavy rain is likely over the next 24 hours. The remaining districts have been placed under a yellow alert, with isolated heavy rainfall expected. What’s Triggering the Heavy Rain? The IMD said the ongoing spell of rain is being driven by upper cyclonic circulations over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coast. These weather systems continue to influence rainfall activity across Kerala, leading to widespread showers and intense spells in several districts. Kottayam Records Highest Rainfall Several parts of central Kerala witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Friday.
Kumarakom in Kottayam recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 14 cm, followed by Vaikom with 13 cm. Kottayam town and Cherthala in Alappuzha received 9 cm of rain each. Flooding Disrupts Normal Life The relentless rain has led to flooding and waterlogging in several parts of the state, affecting daily life and forcing many people to move to safer locations. According to The Indian Express, the heavy monsoon spell has so far claimed 26 lives in Kerala. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, while several houses have been damaged due to flooding and rain-related incidents. Authorities have urged residents, especially those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain cautious and follow advisories issued by district administrations and disaster management officials.
