OpenAI is making a major change to ChatGPT that could make its AI tools more accessible to free users. The company has announced that ChatGPT Free users will soon get unlimited text chats powered by the new GPT-5.6 Luna model. The update is part of OpenAI’s broader push to make its latest AI models available to more people. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5. With the new model, OpenAI is again bringing back the “Think” button, which will allow ChatGPT to spend more time working on questions that require deeper reasoning.
In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote, “5.6 Sol much better in chat now, and unlimited text chat for free users!” Read Full Story What is changing for ChatGPT users Though the GPT-5.6 is shipping with unlimited text-based chats, OpenAI has clarified that separate limits will still apply to features such as file uploads, image generation, images and other tools. Coming back to the Think button, it is aimed at more complex questions. For example, users can use the normal mode for simple questions and turn on Think when they need help with research, calculations, planning or a problem that requires more reasoning.
OpenAI says the new GPT-5.6 Luna is also more reliable with facts. In an internal evaluation involving financial, medical and legal questions, the company found that responses containing at least one factual error were 62 per cent less common with GPT-5.6 Luna compared with GPT-5.5 Instant. For Plus and Pro users, OpenAI is also updating GPT-5.6 Sol. The company says the model will provide more focused answers, use tighter formatting and better adjust the amount of detail depending on the question. These users will also get a new thinking slider, allowing them to choose how much reasoning ChatGPT should use.
When will the changes arrive OpenAI says the updated GPT-5.6 Sol is already available to Plus and Pro users. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users this week, while unlimited text chats and the new Think button are expected to arrive next week. The company says ChatGPT now has more than 1 billion weekly users. With this update, OpenAI is essentially trying to make advanced AI less dependent on a paid subscription, at least for regular text conversations. Ends
