(News18) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged newly inducted MPs of the Common People’s Initiative (NCPI) to focus on the development and welfare of their states, while making full use of Parliament as a platform to learn, participate and contribute to India’s growth. Addressing the new MPs, PM Modi stressed that the development of individual states was intrinsically linked to the country’s overall progress. “Every state doing well will eventually lead to India doing well," he said, according to inputs from the meeting.

The prime minister particularly highlighted the importance of Bengal and Odisha, telling the MPs that the prosperity of these states had historically been closely linked with India’s own prosperity. “When Bengal and Odisha were rich, India was also rich in every manner," PM Modi said, underscoring the importance of their economic and social progress. He added that the development of Bengal, in particular, would send a strong message about India’s emergence as a vibrant and prosperous nation. His remarks come at a politically significant moment for the NCPI. Three former Trinamool Congress MPs who joined the party have so far stayed away from the NDA’s regular parliamentary meetings, signalling differences over the extent of the party’s alignment with the ruling coalition. Against this backdrop, PM Modi’s emphasis on state-specific development and the role of MPs could also be seen as an attempt to underline the importance of parliamentary engagement for the new members.

The prime minister asked the MPs to attend Parliament regularly and participate actively in debates. He also encouraged them to make use of the parliamentary facilities available to them to broaden their understanding of legislative functioning and public policy. “There is enough material available for you to understand the rich glory of India, India’s Parliament and parliamentary democracy," PM Modi told the MPs. He also struck a broader global note, telling the new parliamentarians that this was India’s moment as the world increasingly looks towards the country. For decades, he said, global conversations were dominated by the “story of the West". But the focus has now shifted, with countries increasingly watching what India is doing and how it is progressing on different fronts. For the new NCPI MPs, PM Modi’s message therefore went beyond parliamentary attendance: work for their states, engage seriously with Parliament and use their positions to contribute to what he described as India’s larger moment on the global stage.
