It initially appeared to be an accident. A 32-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur was fatally hit by a car and her crushed body was later discovered on the roadside by passing farmers. However, what emerged further was a meticulous plan hatched by her husband and his accomplices to claim Rs 44 lakh in insurance money. The woman, Rita, was killed by her husband, Amar Singh and three accomplices, who first hit her with a car and then deliberately ran her over again in a conspiracy to pass off the murder as a road accident, police said. However, a detailed investigation unravelled the plot. As part of the plan, Amar Singh took Rita to the road where the incident occurred, while three of his associates waited there with a car. The accused then rammed Rita with the car, causing her to fall into a roadside ditch. They then pulled her out of the ditch, placed her on the road and drove the car over her again, killing her, police said. The four subsequently fled the spot, hoping that the death would be treated as a road accident. Police, too, initially suspected a fatal road accident after farmers discovered the body.
A bank slip found near the spot helped officials identify the victim. However, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar, evidence collected from the scene, technical analysis, surveillance and interrogation of the accused eventually led investigators to conclude that what initially appeared to be an accident was a carefully planned murder. Police alleged that the motive behind the killing was to claim Rs 44 lakh from Rita's life insurance policies and repay debts he owned to one other accused. As per an agreement among the accused, Amar Singh was to receive Rs 15 lakh from the insurance claim, while the remaining amount would be distributed among the other accused.
Rita and Amar Singh had a love marriage around two-and-a-half years ago. It was reportedly Rita's second marriage and Amar Singh's third. Police arrested Amar Singh and his three accomplices, Amit Gupta alias Ram, Pushpendra Soni alias Sahil and Abhay Singh alias Golu, after an investigation spanning around 48 hours uncovered what investigators described as a premeditated murder.
