(Source: ANI/X) The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who is accused of assaulting three on-duty doctors at a civic-run hospital in Dombivli, but directed him to remain in Goa until the chargesheet is filed. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad also granted bail to three of Mhatre’s associates accused in the case. While granting relief, the bench underscored the seriousness of the allegations, observing that violence by elected representatives against public servants strikes at the heart of democracy. “The rule of democracy is elected representatives are by the people and for the people. But if any elected representative assaults voters, such a situation will dent the very fabric of democracy," the bench observed.
The court was informed that the investigation was nearing completion and that the chargesheet would be filed shortly. It directed the police to complete the remaining forensic examination and submit the chargesheet within five days. The bench also said charges should be framed by Monday or Tuesday. What Are The Bail Conditions? As part of the bail conditions, Mhatre and the three co-accused have been asked to report to the local police station three times a week in the state where they choose to stay until the chargesheet is filed. With this bail condition, Mhatre will now be chilling at a Goa resort. Taking note of concerns raised by the doctors, the High Court directed the Maharashtra government to provide adequate police protection to the three victims until they no longer face any security threat. The bench also instructed the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) not to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the doctors for remaining absent from work following the alleged assault.
