(AFP) The student accused of carrying out Friday’s deadly shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School near Bangkok had allegedly shot and killed his grandparents at their home before heading to the campus, Thai police said. The attack left at least eight people dead, including three teachers, three students and the suspect’s grandparents. According to investigators, the suspect first targeted his grandparents at their residence and then travelled to the school in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, where he opened fire on students and teachers.

Panic And Chaos As Gunfire Erupts The shooting sent students running for safety while emergency teams rushed to the scene. Ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals as frightened teachers and students gathered outside the campus. An 18-year-old student told Reuters that he initially thought the sounds were firecrackers. “I didn’t think it was a gun at first," he said. “There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again." Emergency responders said several victims sustained gunshot injuries to the chest, back and arms. Death Toll Includes Teachers And Students Thailand’s Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong confirmed that both teachers and students were among those killed in the attack. Emergency responder Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said rescue teams arrived while the shooting was still in progress. He said responders found a male teacher dead on one of the upper floors of the school. In a separate room, they located a female teacher who had suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and arm.
“We gave CPR for about 30 minutes and rushed her to the hospital as we could not get her heart rate up, but we tried our best," he said. Police said 15 people were injured in the attack. Local broadcaster Channel 3 reported that two of the injured remain in critical condition. According to district authorities, the school had around 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said officials had been directed to assist. Deputy Education Minister Akkharanan Kannakittinan said support efforts for those affected were being coordinated. Survivors Recall Moments Of Fear Images from the scene showed students and teachers gathered outside as security personnel secured the campus. One witness told local media that students took shelter inside a classroom after hearing gunfire from another building. They remained there until police escorted them out safely. Second School Shooting Reported This Year Friday’s attack marked the second school shooting in Thailand this year. In February, a 17-year-old reportedly stole a firearm from police and opened fire at a public high school in southern Thailand, killing a teacher, injuring a student and briefly holding hostages.
