From top officials to ordinary voters, Election Commission’s verification exercise flags name, address discrepancies Uttarakhand SIR: The Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Uttarakhand has taken an unexpected turn, with its notices reaching the doors of those overseeing the process itself — including the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, a BJP MLA and the Kumaon Commissioner. The notices, issued as part of the ongoing voter verification exercise are largely linked to routine discrepancies such as spelling mistakes, incomplete names and outdated addresses, officials said as reported by news agency PTI.

Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer B V R C Purushottam was among those who received a notice after a discrepancy was found in his name in the electoral records. Rather than signalling any irregularity, Purushottam said such notices are a routine part of the revision process. He has already submitted the required documents to the concerned Booth Level Officer (BLO). Purushottam on Thursday urged voters not to panic if they receive such notices and said errors in names, addresses or other particulars can be corrected by submitting the prescribed documents. “Routine discrepancy cases" will be verified and disposed of at the BLO level itself, he said, adding that district election officers have been instructed to ensure that voters are not put to unnecessary inconvenience. In Nainital, a notice was served at the residence of BJP MLA Sarita Arya, seeking voter verification details for the legislator and her younger son.

A similar notice reached the residence of Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat during the Election Commission’s door-to-door verification drive. Officials stressed that the exercise is being carried out uniformly and does not distinguish between ordinary voters and those holding political or administrative positions. Nainital Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nawazish Khalik said Booth Level Officers were visiting households to verify voter details and collect the required information. According to Purushottam, 24.30 lakh notices have been issued so far under the SIR, of which around 20.27 lakh have already been delivered to voters. The CEO said cases involving voters who could not be mapped would receive special attention and be examined by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO). The focus, he said, is to ensure that electoral rolls remain accurate and updated while giving voters an opportunity to rectify discrepancies in their records.
