(File Pic) France has submitted its detailed technical and commercial proposal to India for the 114 Rafale jet deal, marking a major development in one of the country’s biggest defence procurement programmes and solidifying its commitment to enhancing defence ties with New Delhi.
Under the proposal, France offers large-scale local manufacturing and production of the multi-role combat aircraft. At present, it remains under consideration by the Acquisition Wing of the Defence Ministry and the Indian Air Force (IAF), according to an ANI report, citing sources. The proposal came in response to India’s Letter of Request (LoR) sent to France this year, seeking the purchase of 114 Rafale multirole fighter jets. A key highlight of the proposal put forth by France is the plan to manufacture 94 out of 114 aircraft in India with a local industry partner in line with the Modi government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. The ‘Indigenisation’ Aspect According to ANI, a significant amount of indigenisation is expected in the deal and it is likely to provide opportunities worth around Rs 1.6 lakh crore to major Indian industry players, including Tata, Larsen, and Toubro.
The project is expected to accelerate India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem as it intends to address the Indian Air Force’s declining squadron strength following the phased retirement of ageing MiG fighter aircraft. Role In ‘Operation Sindoor’ During the ‘Operation Sindoor’ –– India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack –– the Rafale served as the spearhead and operational “hero" for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The jets defied and jammed hostile air defenses to precisely strike nine major terror launchpads deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. During the ensuing cross-border confrontation, the jets played a pivotal role in safeguarding Indian territory, effectively neutralizing Pakistani strikes and strengthening India’s defensive posture.
