A 73-year-old man from Odisha travelled nearly 150 kilometres on a tricycle with a fractured leg to reach the government-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after being unable to afford medical treatment. The elderly man, identified as Sukadev Nahak, is a resident of Nayagarh district. According to hospital authorities, he covered the distance over nearly two days, pedalling the tricycle on his own despite suffering from a fracture in his left leg.
Read Full Story Nahak, who previously worked as a village watchman, said financial constraints prevented him from seeking timely medical care after the accident. With no one to accompany him and limited resources, he decided to undertake the arduous journey to Berhampur in the hope of receiving treatment in the government-run medical college. During the trip, he survived on food offered by people he met along the way as he had no money to buy meals.
Despite the pain and exhaustion, he continued the journey until he reached the hospital. Speaking about his experience, Nahak said he travelled for nearly two days to reach Berhampur for treatment. He added that his wife died in 2011 and that his son is mentally unwell and unable to work, leaving the family in severe financial distress. He expressed hope that the treatment would help him recover and walk again.
After learning about his condition, the authorities at MKCG Medical College and Hospital admitted him for medical evaluation. The hospital administration said doctors would conduct the necessary investigations to assess the extent of his injuries before deciding the course of treatment. Officials also assured that Nahak would receive the required medical care at the government-run hospital. Ends
