(File pic: ANI) The political aftershocks of the nationwide ‘Gen Z’ protests are set to dominate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde on Thursday, according to sources. The meeting comes as the Centre steps up consultations with leaders of NDA allies to assess the impact of the youth-led protests that have spread across several states in recent weeks.
Sources said Shinde has been invited as part of the prime minister’s ongoing outreach to coalition partners to review the situation on the ground and gather state-specific feedback. According to sources, the meeting had been scheduled during an earlier interaction between the two leaders. While the prime minister is expected to take stock of the situation in Maharashtra following the Gen Z protests, discussions could also extend to political and organisational matters within the ruling alliance. The protests, driven largely by young aspirants over issues linked to competitive examinations and employment, have emerged as one of the biggest political challenges for the NDA government in recent weeks. What began as demonstrations over irregularities in recruitment and examination processes has snowballed into a broader youth mobilisation, drawing support from opposition parties and triggering protests across multiple states. The movement has also sparked concerns within the ruling alliance about its political resonance among first-time and young voters.
The meeting also assumes significance against the backdrop of recent political developments in Maharashtra. Six MPs from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) faction recently joined the Shiv Sena led by Shinde, strengthening his position within the NDA. The MPs, along with several Shiv Sena parliamentarians, had recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, signalling continued coordination between the BJP leadership and its Maharashtra ally. Sources said the prime minister and Shinde may also discuss development projects in the constituencies represented by Shiv Sena MPs. With Parliament’s Monsoon Session underway and preparations for upcoming electoral battles gathering pace, ensuring smooth implementation of constituency-level projects is expected to be on the agenda. Another issue that could figure in the discussions is the long-awaited expansion of the cabinet. While there has been no official confirmation, sources indicated that the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle or expansion may also be reviewed during the meeting.
