One of the major initiatives launched as part of this year's celebrations is Handloom Hackathon 2026: "Weaving Innovation".The Ministry of Textiles says the hackathon aims to bring technology, design, entrepreneurship and sustainable solutions into the handloom sector. Its areas of focus include design and product innovation, sustainability, digital technology, market access, branding, supply chains, productivity and entrepreneurship.While the official material refers to "Weaving Innovation" as the theme of the 2026 hackathon, it is better not to describe it as the official Handloom Day theme unless the Ministry specifically designates it as such.When is Handloom Day 2026?
Handloom Day is celebrated every year on August 7.The date commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905. The movement encouraged the use of indigenous products and gave fresh impetus to domestic industries, including handloom weaving. The Government declared August 7 as Handloom Day in 2015.The first Handloom Day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai in 2015.Why is Handloom Day celebrated?The day recognises the contribution of India's handloom weavers to the country's cultural heritage and socio-economic development.Handloom production is closely connected with local communities and traditional skills that have been passed down through generations. Unlike mass-produced textiles, handwoven products often carry the distinctive identity of the region, community and artisan behind them.The occasion also aims to encourage consumers to appreciate and support authentic handloom products while creating greater awareness about the livelihoods associated with the sector. Handloom Day 2026 celebrations in DelhiThe 12th Handloom Day will be celebrated on August 7 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi.According to the Ministry of Textiles, President Droupadi Murmu will attend the celebrations as Chief Guest. The event will bring together handloom weavers, award winners, government officials and other stakeholders from the sector.A key part of the programme will be the presentation of the Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and Handloom Awards for 2025.
