As police and forensic teams examined the mangled Hyundai Creta that crashed into a divider on the Kanpur-Jhansi Highway, they recovered a number of personal belongings from inside the vehicle, all of which have now been seized as evidence.
The four mobile phones recovered from the SUV are also likely to be examined as part of the probe. According to police, the following items were recovered from the crashed vehicle—a pouch of Signature gutkha, a packet of Classic cigarettes, four mobile phones, two English books, one of them being The Stationery Shop of Tehran, one pair of shoes, four pairs of slippers, and other miscellaneous personal belongings. Among the recovered belongings, the four mobile phones could become a key part of the investigation. Police are expected to analyse the devices to reconstruct the occupants’ movements, identify recent calls and messages, and determine whether any communication before the accident could help establish what happened in the moments leading up to the crash.
Abaan, 21, was travelling with four friends to Jhansi Jail to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmed, who is lodged there. According to police, the SUV was moving at high speed when the driver lost control and the vehicle slammed into a divider. Abaan and his friend Mohammad Shakir alias Sonu died in the accident, while three others were injured. Investigators are examining multiple possibilities, including overspeeding and other factors, after conflicting accounts emerged about what caused the driver to lose control. According to Jhansi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) BB GTS Murti, the driver, Zaid, experienced “momentary blackout or dizziness", which led to the accident. Who Was Abaan Ahmed? Abaan was the youngest of Atiq Ahmed’s five sons. His elder brothers Umar and Ali remain in jail, while Asad Ahmed was killed in a police encounter in 2023. Days after Asad’s death, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj while being escorted by police.
