A New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay $567 million to address young people's mental health and safety harms caused by its social media platforms. The decision came in the second phase of a landmark trial after Meta lost in March. Under the ruling, $420 million will be allocated for treatment services for youth, while the remaining funds will support awareness, prevention, screening, and other related costs.
Meanwhile, India is also intensifying regulatory scrutiny on big tech companies, particularly Meta. The Indian government proposed updates to Information Technology rules to tighten oversight of artificial intelligence content and deepfakes. The draft changes propose reducing the deadline to remove unlawful AI-generated content from 36 hours to three hours, mandating AI content labeling, and strengthening grievance redressal. The move follows discussions with Meta over platform accountability, compliance with Indian laws, child sexual abuse material, and the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook post.
