The Centre has stepped up outreach regarding the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act Amendment Bill during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. Discussions were held with delegations representing religious groups and regional leaders to address concerns over the proposed legislation. The Home Ministry assured stakeholders that the provisions would not apply retrospectively and that the bill is scheduled for discussion in Parliament on August 12.
Proposed changes include stricter monitoring of non-governmental organisations receiving foreign funding, restricted timeframes for using foreign contributions, and prohibition of asset sales during suspension. Registration rules are set to become more stringent, with management facing liability for non-compliance to prevent funding misuse. Meanwhile, several Opposition parties have expressed strong reservations against the bill, citing concerns over minority rights and asset management, which poses a numerical challenge for the ruling alliance in both Houses of Parliament.
