(Video screengrab/IANS) Shocking details have emerged in the alleged horrific gangrape and murder of a Class 10 student in Southern Assam’s Hailakandi district, triggering immense public rage and widespread demands for police “encounter" action against the perpetrators. Five individuals, including a minor classmate of the victim, have been arrested in connection with the crime, which occurred on August 1 and has drawn widespread comparisons to the 2012 Nirbhaya case in New Delhi.
Horrific Details of the Attack According to local reports, the incident took place while villagers had gathered for a community feast near the victim’s house. The victim left early for home, and when her mother returned shortly after with food, she found her daughter lying dead in a pool of blood. The scene was harrowing: one side of the victim’s face was completely smashed, both her legs were broken, and a heavy rod had been brutally used during the assault. Neighbours who rushed to the scene described the sight as horrifying. Outraged residents subsequently blocked main roads in Hailakandi, demanding immediate arrests and exemplary punishment. ‘Bricks, Kitchen Implements Used’ Addressing the media on Thursday, the Superintendent of Police confirmed that crucial breakthroughs had been achieved following the arrest of two additional suspects, bringing the total number of custody arrests to five.
According to police, the accused confessed to the motive during interrogation. “They stated they had been in relationships with her, which led to repeated quarrels. Subsequently, they decided to ‘teach her a lesson’," the SP revealed. Knowing the victim was home alone, the suspects entered the residence with their accomplices. “Bricks and heavy kitchen implements were used to assault and murder her. She was severely injured, sexually abused, and ultimately killed," the SP stated, adding that the investigation is nearing completion to ensure swift justice. Encounter Them: Locals The brutality of the attack has triggered widespread outrage, particularly among women’s groups across the district. “Let the police encounter these culprits. If two or three rapists are shot, it will serve as a strong deterrent so women can feel safe," expressed an emotional local resident during a protest.
