Nicknamed “Donald Trump" by a farmer who thought its blond hair resembled the signature hairstyle of the US president, the buffalo shot to fame after videos of it circulated online. What started as a light hearted comparison soon became a nationwide talking point, with crowds arriving to see the animal for themselves. The buffalo was originally purchased ahead of Eid al Adha, the Muslim festival of sacrifice, and was expected to be slaughtered as part of the celebrations. However, growing public interest and security concerns prompted authorities to intervene. The government later ordered the animal’s transfer to the national zoo in Dhaka. Visitors have been gathering around the enclosure throughout the day, filming videos and taking photographs despite the sweltering heat. Children could be seen sitting on their parents’ shoulders for a better view while zoo workers ensured the animal remained comfortable. A Name That Sparked Debate Not everyone has welcomed the comparison.
Some visitors felt naming the buffalo after a prominent world leader crossed a line. Among them was Mohammad Joynal Adedin, who described the decision as inappropriate. “Giving a farm animal the name of one of the world’s most influential leaders was certainly the wrong thing to do," he said. “It seems disrespectful." The controversy has also attracted attention beyond the zoo. Local media reported that the animal’s enclosure initially carried a sign displaying the name “Donald Trump" but it was later removed. The zoo’s curator was dismissed on Saturday although officials have not publicly explained the reason behind the decision. Visitors Travel Long Distances For many, the buffalo’s fame was reason enough to make the journey to Dhaka. Mohammad Habibur Rahman, who travelled from the southwestern city of Jashore, said he had followed the story online for days. “Before Eid, I kept seeing posts on Facebook saying that ‘Donald Trump’ would be sacrificed," he said. “Later I heard that it had been taken to a zoo instead. That made me curious, so I decided to come and see ‘Donald Trump’ for myself." As visitors continue to queue outside the enclosure, the buffalo’s journey from a farm animal destined for sacrifice to one of Bangladesh’s most photographed attractions shows no sign of losing public interest.
