Eight members of the Agarwal family were among the 21 people killed in the devastating fire that engulfed a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday. At the family’s residence in Sector 46, neighbours and relatives gathered in shock, struggling to come to terms with the scale of the loss. Among those who died were chartered accountant Vivek Agarwal, his wife Tarjini, his mother Prem Lata, daughters Jivisa and Variya, and three other relatives. The family had been staying at the hotel as Vivek’s father, Radhe Shyam Agarwal, was undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
According to relatives, Vivek had booked two rooms at the property to remain close to the medical facility. “We have been told that the bodies will arrive tomorrow after the post-mortem. We are all shocked," said Yogender Singh, a neighbour. He said Vivek worked as a chartered accountant with a private firm, while his wife was involved in social work through an NGO. Another neighbour, Dhull, remembered the family as warm and approachable. “None of us can believe that the entire family got killed in the fire. Vivek was a good-natured man, and the family was on friendly terms with everyone in the neighbourhood," he said. The tragedy has left Radhe Shyam Agarwal as the only surviving member of his immediate family. Relatives said one of Vivek’s daughters had travelled from Bengaluru just a day earlier to visit her grandfather in hospital. Puneet Gupta, a relative, recalled speaking to Vivek while the fire was still raging. “He called me and said, ‘Brother, maybe we won’t survive.’ I told him to wet a handkerchief and cover his face, but it was of no help," Gupta said.
“By the time we reached there, they were all dead." Family members have also raised concerns over safety measures at the hotel. Gupta questioned whether adequate fire-safety arrangements were in place, saying the property was located inside a narrow lane that could have complicated rescue efforts. “The lane is extremely narrow, and there was no proper fire escape arrangement. We still don’t know what caused the fire," he said. Another relative described the aftermath as heartbreaking. “We were unable to recognise them just by looking at their pictures. Everyone was severely burnt," the family member said. The fire broke out on Wednesday morning at the five-storey Flourish Stay B&B in Malviya Nagar. Officials said the blaze spread rapidly through the building, trapping several occupants inside. At least 58 people were rescued and taken to hospitals, while 21 were declared dead. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining whether the establishment complied with mandatory fire-safety regulations.
