Her son Samarth, lodged in Barrack 4-B with 15 others, has been assigned Prisoner No. 1782. By Wednesday morning, elder son Siddharth arrived at the Bhopal jail gates, first meeting Samarth, then mother Giribala. A retired judge who once sent criminals to Bhopal Central Jail is now inside it herself — as prisoner number 71. While her son Samarth spent the night tossing and turning, Giribala slept soundly, declined the chana dal, and told officials she had nothing to worry about. The first night told two very different stories. Giribala Singh, 14-day judicial custody now her new reality in the Twisha Sharma death case, remained composed enough to sleep through the night. Samarth, logged as prisoner number 1782 and housed in Barrack 4-B with 15 other inmates, was visibly anxious — restless on his barrack bed for much of the night. By Wednesday morning, elder son Siddharth arrived at the jail gates, first meeting Samarth, then his mother. What Did They Eat On Their First Night? Both mother and son were served dinner at 6 pm — roti with kadhi-pakora, the same meal as every other inmate.
Neither requested a special diet. Giribala, however, drew a quiet line: she refused to eat the chana dal. The next morning brought salted porridge and tea, which both had without complaint. How Is Giribala Holding Up Medically? Jail authorities found her physically fit during her medical examination. She reported no illness and confirmed she is on no regular medication. She was calm during interactions with jail officials. “We have complete faith in the law. My son and I have done nothing wrong," she told them. Samarth’s medical examination was scheduled for Wednesday, though he too claimed to be in good health. His lawyer, however, told the court during a hearing that Samarth had a foot injury — sustained, he said, when a mediaperson accidentally stepped on his foot during a previous court appearance. The lawyer alleged the CBI was not taking it seriously and had not even provided a pain-relief spray. Where Exactly Are They Being Kept?
Giribala has been placed in the medical section of the women’s wing — a concession the court granted to her security concerns. She shares the space with four other female prisoners, but is kept separate from the general women’s population. Her reasoning was pointed: as a judge who spent nearly four years in Bhopal — serving as Principal District and Sessions Judge and Additional Sessions Judge — she had convicted multiple accused in murder, POCSO, and other serious criminal cases. Those convicts, she argued in court, could now be her neighbours behind bars. What Happened In Court — And Why Were Phones Banned? Both accused were brought to court through the rear entrance, surrounded by a police cordon. Civilian movement in the court premises was restricted, and people near the courtroom were barred from using mobile phones during the proceedings. Giribala was represented by a legal aid defence team. Samarth’s advocate was Enosh George Carlo. During the hearing, Giribala turned the spotlight around — accusing Twisha Sharma’s lawyers of conducting a media trial, even as she herself had held a press conference after Samarth’s anticipatory bail was rejected. Samarth also alleged in court that a lawyer in Jabalpur had physically assaulted him and used abusive language. The court directed the lawyer to appear. The lawyer denied the assault, saying he had only restrained the accused, and offered CCTV footage as proof.
What Happens Next? All eyes are now on the continued CBI investigation and the next date of hearing. Giribala’s complaint that the CBI repeatedly took her up to the terrace during scene recreation — and allegedly parked the vehicle some distance from her home to inconvenience her — remains on record. For now, the former judge who once decided fates from the bench is learning what it means to be on the other side of the courtroom.
