Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to celebrate Handloom Day on August 7 with the same enthusiasm as Friendship Day, calling on citizens to support India’s weaver families by buying handloom products and promoting them on social media. In a video posted on Instagram, PM Modi recalled that the Swadeshi movement began on August 7, 1905, as part of India’s freedom struggle against British rule.
He said the movement united people across the country and became a symbol of self-reliance. He encouraged people to purchase at least one handloom product, record a video showcasing it and share it online to inspire others to support the sector. “Our goal is to build an Atmanirbhar Bharat. For that, even the smallest and poorest families must become economically prosperous,” PM Modi said, adding that greater public support would help showcase the talent and craftsmanship of Indian weavers to the world.
