(PTI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday made it clear that reservation will continue in India, but underscored that those who have already benefitted from the quota system should allow others to access the same opportunities. Bhagwat made the remarks while addressing 2,000 youngsters at an event at Mumbai’s Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) focusing on Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

During the event, the RSS chief sought to answer the concerns of India’s youth in the aftermath of the recent student protests. When asked about reservation, he said, “Reservation should continue as long as social discrimination exists. But those who have already benefitted and whose situation has improved should consider allowing others to access the same opportunities." He also emphasised that the issue should not be politicised.

Politics should be kept away from this issue," he added. The RSS chief also invoked Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, saying reservation existed due to social discrimination. “As long as there is social discrimination, reservation will continue. Those who received it and benefited should pass it on," he said. Bhagwat also said the measure was implemented for greater social unity, but politics had created “bad blood" among different communities. “The measure in itself is not wrong, but those who wield the sword are doing it in the wrong way intentionally.
