(Photo: PTI) As many as 11 MLAs who were earlier seen as loyalists of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have reportedly shifted to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s camp, signalling a significant realignment within the Karnataka Congress just days after the leadership transition in the state. The development comes a day after DK Shivakumar took the oath as Karnataka Chief Minister on June 3, marking a major leadership transition in the state. Shivakumar was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party on May 30 before being sworn in at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, succeeding Siddaramaiah after the latter completed three years in office.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior Congress leaders and was carefully projected as a smooth transfer of power, with Siddaramaiah sharing the stage with Shivakumar in a display of party unity. Of the 13 ministers sworn in on Wednesday, 11 were part of the outgoing cabinet, indicating that the Congress leadership has opted to retain experienced faces during the change of guard in Karnataka. The two fresh entrants are MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, making his debut as a minister, and senior Congress leader U T Khader. Khader resigned as Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly earlier in the day before joining the new ministry. One notable aspect of the first round of cabinet formation is the absence of any woman MLA. The issue is likely to draw attention as the government moves towards further expansion of the ministry. Senior Dalit leader G Parameshwara was also among those inducted and is expected to take over as Deputy Chief Minister.
The remaining ministers sworn in include K H Muniyappa, K J George, M B Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, Satish Jarkiholi, Krishna Byregowda, Priyank Kharge, Eshwar Khandre, Byrathi Suresh and Sharan Prakash Patil. ‘New Youth Era’ At Centre Of Shivakumar’s Vision Hours after assuming office, Shivakumar outlined a si point roadmap centred on youth welfare and employment, signalling the priorities of his administration. The proposed measures include free bus travel passes for students, a dedicated employment exchange for private-sector jobs, the establishment of 10,000 youth associations across the state and a Rs 2,000-crore initiative to improve Bengaluru’s road infrastructure. Presenting the programme as the beginning of a “new youth era", the Chief Minister said young people would be placed at the heart of the government’s development agenda. He emphasised that creating opportunities, improving access to jobs and encouraging greater youth participation in governance and development would remain key focus areas of his administration. The leadership change was one of the most significant political developments in Karnataka since the Congress returned to power in the 2023 Assembly elections.
For the past three years, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had remained the party’s two principal power centres, with periodic speculation over succession and internal equations.
