The building holds immense historical and political significance. Over the decades, the address became an important centre of political activity linked to the ideological lineage of the BJP. Following the formation of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, the building served as the party’s Kolkata office.
When the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was established in 1980, the premises continued to function as a key organisational hub, accommodating both BJP leaders and members associated with the erstwhile Jana Sangh. Party leaders believe the building represents an important chapter in Bengal’s political history and remains closely connected to the legacy of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. As a result, discussions are underway to convert the historic structure into a dedicated museum that would showcase his life, political journey, ideological contributions and role in shaping modern Indian politics. According to BJP insiders, the proposed museum would preserve the building’s heritage while offering visitors an opportunity to learn about Mukherjee’s work and his influence on national politics. The structure is considered unique because of its direct association with the Jana Sangh founder and the decades of political activity that took place within its walls. The BJP is also reportedly considering the installation of a large statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in West Bengal.
However, party leaders believe that converting the historic Murlidhar Sen Lane office into a museum would be an equally significant tribute, given the building’s direct connection to him. “The building carries the history, memory and legacy of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. People who visit the museum will be able to understand his life and contributions from every perspective," a senior BJP leader said. Party veterans also argue that for decades there has been no comprehensive institutional space in Bengal dedicated to presenting Mukherjee’s legacy. The proposed museum, they believe, would help address that gap while preserving a landmark that has been associated with the BJP and its ideological predecessors for nearly eight decades. If the proposal moves forward, the transformation of the historic office into a museum would mark a significant effort by the BJP to preserve its organisational heritage in Bengal while commemorating one of its most influential ideological figures.
