Ahead of the debate on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met members of the Christian community, who raised concerns over the proposed legislation and sought the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to examine the Bill. According to sources, Shah listened carefully to the delegation’s concerns and assured them that he would examine the issues and discuss them with other members of the government. The meeting is part of a series of consultations the Home Minister has held with church leaders and Chief Ministers of northeastern states since the Bill was introduced in Parliament in March. According to sources, the Home Minister heard the delegation’s views in detail and assured them that their concerns would be looked into before further discussions within the government. The Christian groups also demanded that the Bill be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for detailed scrutiny. What happened in the July 10 meeting? During an earlier meeting with church leaders on July 10, Shah said that of the nearly Rs 17,000 crore in foreign donations received in India last year, around Rs 3,000 crore was meant for Christian organisations. According to Union Minister Jonathan Lalremruata, the Home Minister told the delegation that the proposed law was intended to regulate foreign funding and was not directed against any religious community. He also acknowledged the contribution of churches to nation-building. The delegation also raised incidents of aggression against churches and members of the Christian community. According to Lalremruata, Shah advised that First Information Reports (FIRs) should be filed in every such case. When the delegation said police often refused to register complaints, Shah asked them to report such cases directly to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
