Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS) president Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Thursday announced a nationwide movement to secure 50% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in legislative bodies, and unveiled a 11-point charter aimed at the empowerment of marginalised communities. Addressing the Samajika Nyaya Telangana Sankalpa Sabha at Saroornagar, Ms. Kavitha called on the Centre to pass the BC Reservation Bill providing 50% representation to BCs in legislatures before the forthcoming Budget Session of the Parliament.
Warning of intensified agitation if the Bill is not enacted, she said the party would organise a massive ‘Chalo Delhi’ programme with thousands of activists. Kavitha said her political decisions were guided by conviction and conscience and expressed confidence that the movement would bring about structural changes in society. She argued that had BCs received reservations in proportion to their population soon after Independence, India would have progressed further and emerged among the world’s leading powers.
Criticising both the ruling dispensation and the Opposition, she accused political leaders of pursuing contradictory positions at the State and national levels. She demanded immediate approval of the State government’s proposal for 42% reservation for BCs, which is pending with the Centre. Recalling the teachings of late Professor K. Jayashankar on his birth anniversary, a key ideologue of the Telangana movement, Ms. Kavitha said he had maintained that while the struggle for separate statehood and social justice could not be pursued simultaneously, the fight for a socially just Telangana should continue with the same commitment once statehood was achieved.
She reiterated her resolve to carry forward that vision through the movement for greater social justice and political representation for BCs.
