The child underwent surgery on her right leg at the district hospital about a month and a half ago. In a distressing case reported from a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, a doctor allegedly broke a child’s leg after it had been set, because her mother was unable to pay a bribe. The doctor had demanded a total of Rs 25,000 for the operation, of which the mother paid Rs 8,000. When she refused to pay the remaining amount, the doctor allegedly called her daughter for a check-up and caused a severe injury to her leg. According to reports, the 14-year-old girl who suffered the incident is mentally unwell. It is also noted that the district administration had previously instructed the doctor to provide free treatment, as the single mother could not afford the expenses. Despite the CMO’s instructions, the doctor allegedly continued to demand Rs 25,000 from the family. Woman Approached District Collectorate The woman, identified as Reshma, has reached the district collectorate along with her 14-year-old daughter, seeking justice. According to Reshma, her daughter underwent surgery on her right leg at the district hospital about a month and a half ago. She alleged that hospital staff initially demanded Rs 25,000 for the procedure. Being a widow with limited means, she expressed her inability to pay, after which she was allegedly denied treatment. She later approached the District Magistrate, who directed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to ensure free treatment. However, she further alleged that hospital staff still collected Rs 8,000, assuring her that the remaining amount could be paid later. The situation, she claimed, worsened during a follow-up visit when the operating doctor called the child for a check-up. Reshma alleged that the doctor forcibly bent the girl’s knee during the procedure, causing her to scream in pain and leading to a cracking sound from the leg. She said the child’s condition deteriorated further afterwards, and her complaints were ignored when she raised the issue with hospital authorities. Reacting to the allegations, Chief Medical Officer Sunil Tiwari said it would be premature to draw conclusions without hearing the other side. He added that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the matter and strict action will be taken if any negligence or wrongdoing is found.
