(Picture Credit: AFP) Real Madrid took to X on Thursday to announce the signing of Ivory Coast forward Yan Diomande from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig on a seven-year contract. The 19-year-old featured in four matches for Ivory Coast at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, registering one assist during the tournament. “Real Madrid CF and RB Leipzig have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Yan Diomande, who will be linked to our club for the next seven seasons, until June 30, 2033," Real Madrid Club Football said in a statement.
According to reports in Spanish media, the deal is a club-record fee of 140 million euros ($161 million) including bonuses. Madrid, who did not disclose the transfer fee, beat Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool to the signing of Diomande. PSG pulled out of the running because of concerns over the size of the transfer fee, while Liverpool reportedly had a bid rejected in June. Diomande spent one season in the German top flight with Leipzig following a switch from Spanish side Leganes in 2025. He was the Bundesliga young player of the season, netting 12 goals and laying on eight assists. He overall played 36 competitive matches for Leipzig and scored 13 goals in addition to providing 10 assists. 🚨???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The club and the management believed in me a year ago, even though I had only played a few professional matches at that point. They placed their trust in me and gave me the opportunity to prove myself at the highest level," Diomande said in a release. “I was able to establish myself in one of the best leagues in Europe, earn my place in the Ivory Coast national team, and represent my country on the biggest stage possible, the FIFA World Cup. None of this would have been possible without RB Leipzig, and I will always be grateful for that." “The move to Real Madrid is the fulfillment of a childhood dream. I am all the more grateful to the management at RB Leipzig for making this transfer possible despite my existing contract," he added. Diomande is Madrid’s sixth signing this summer, following Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espi. Madrid, who hired Portuguese veteran Jose Mourinho as coach for a second spell to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, are overhauling their squad after going two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.
