Progressive organisations of Shivamogga will take out a massive rally here on Monday in response to a call by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Joint Central Trade Unions (JCTU), to demand the repeal of labour codes, oppose privatisation, and press for a guaranteed minimum support price for farmers, among other demands, Karnataka Raitha Sangha president H.R. Basavarajappa said.
Addressing a press conference in Shivamogga on Thursday, Mr. Basavarajappa said the JCTU and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha had given a call for a nationwide protest opposing what they termed the anti-farmer and anti-labour policies of both the Centre and State governments. Organisations participating in the protest would also oppose the forcible acquisition of land, he said.
“The protest marks the anniversary of the Quit India movement of the pre-Independence era. We are raising our voice against corporate companies and want them to quit the country,” he said. Representatives of various progressive groups will assemble at Shivappa Nayaka Circle at 10.30 a.m. on the day, he added.
Leaders of progressive forums, including T.H. Haleshappa of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) and K.L. Ashok of Karnataka Janashakti, among others, were present at the press conference.
