(You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Bengaluru: Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Thursday that his government plans to develop three Lalbagh-style botanical gardens in Bengaluru to expand green spaces and improve urban liveability.The announcement came after the CM inaugurated the 220th Lalbagh Flower Show, themed "Glory of the Ganga Dynasty," organised as part of the Independence Day celebrations.The government proposes to develop one park on Defence land in Bengaluru, subject to approval from the Union Defence Ministry, while the remaining two will come up on forest land within the city."I have written to the Ministry of Defence seeking permission, and I will soon meet the Union Defence Minister.
The Prime Minister had earlier approved a similar park on Defence land in Varanasi. We also plan to develop two such parks on forest land in Bengaluru," the CM said.Shivakumar said agencies such as the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the Horticulture Department would execute the projects. "Our government is committed to protecting Bengaluru's green cover and improving the quality of urban life," he said.The proposal comes as the state government steps up initiatives to enhance public spaces and restore Bengaluru's image as India's "Garden City". In recent weeks, the government has launched drives to clear footpath encroachments, remove abandoned vehicles and improve civic infrastructure across the city.Inviting the public to visit the flower show, the CM said this year's edition celebrates the legacy of the Ganga dynasty and its contribution to Karnataka's agricultural and water management heritage."Lalbagh is not just a park; it is part of our history.
The Ganga dynasty built lakes that continue to serve Karnataka even today. This flower show reflects our culture, agriculture and artistic heritage," he said.The 10-day exhibition features floral recreations depicting the history and cultural legacy of the Ganga dynasty. Shivakumar said the Horticulture Department had showcased the dynasty's contribution to Karnataka
through elaborate floral installations.The CM also announced that the government would unveil a farmer-government partnership programme on August 15 aimed at increasing the state's green cover while creating livelihood opportunities for farmers. The initiative will form part of the government's proposed 100-day programme focused on strengthening the agriculture sector, he said.
