Reiterating his opposition to a “Hindu Rashtra,” Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah said such a State would entrench the exploitation of backward classes and Dalits under the caste system. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on Thursday, Yathindra said proponents of Hindutva would impose a social order based on the Manusmriti under a Hindu Rashtra. “The social order of the Manusmriti is exploitative.
Shudras and Dalits would once again be subjected to exploitation,” he said. Yathindra said he was only reiterating Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s words on the subject. “If India becomes a Hindu Rashtra, it would be very dangerous for the country,” he said, quoting Ambedkar. India remains a secular country, he added, pointing out that the Constitution makes this explicit.
District-in-charge Minister Touring parts of Mysuru district to review the drought situation, Yathindra said he had earlier been given temporary charge as Minister-in-Charge of the district. That responsibility, he said, is now “more or less confirmed.” He added that he would visit Urulingapeddi Mutt and Suttur Mutt to seek the Seer’s blessings, as this would be his first visit to the district in his capacity as Minister-in-Charge.
Responding to a question, Yathindra said Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had, during the recent all-party meeting in Bengaluru, directed that water also be released to the canals. With the dams filling and water naturally overflowing, he said, it made sense to release water to the canals as well.
