In June last year, Muhammedali chose to confront his past and went to the police to confess to his alleged crime. A year on, investigators have delved into an extensive probe, collecting shreds of memories, a newspaper cutting from 1986, worn documents and a sketch of the deceased to comprehend the case, said the report. What Happened Exactly In December 1986? According to the report by The Indian Express, citing investigators, Muhammedali — then Thaipparambail Antony — and Mohanan, then 22, worked in a field of a local farmer. On December 14, 1986, Mohanan allegedly attempted to sexually assault his companion, Muhammedali, after which, the latter reportedly pushed him into the river, causing him to drown. “A native of Kudiyanmala in Kannur, Mohanan had come to Koodaranji only days before, so people didn’t know who the body belonged to.
The body was cremated as unidentified and the matter was then closed", Thiruvambady police station house officer K Prasanth said, as quoted by the outlet. Son’s Death Added To Emotional Weight Born to a Christian family in Koodaranji village, Muhammedali was immensely disturbed by the incident. He ran away from home and took up sundry jobs across Keralam and Tamil Nadu. Eventually, he converted to Islam, adopted the name Muhammedali, and settled in Malappuram, where he works as coconut climber, The Indian Express reported. But the haunting memories of the past did not spare him. According to Muhammedali, he wanted to confess to the alleged crime years ago but waited for his children to grow up and become self-dependent. However, the death of one of his four children added to the emotional baggage he had been carrying. “My first wife abandoned me.

After his confession, Muhammedali was arrested by Thiruvambadi Police in Kozhikode on charged of murder. Subsequently, he was sent to judicial custody and later released on a bail.
