How a Florida flight instructor safely landed an aircraft on busy Interstate 10 Dashcam footage captures the dramatic emergency landing Emily Shelton says her training prepared her for the emergency "My fault for the traffic guys" TikTok post goes viral FAA is investigating what caused the engine trouble A 21-year-old Florida flight instructor is being hailed as a hero after safely landing a single-engine aircraft on busy Interstate 10 near Pensacola when an in-flight engine emergency left her with no chance of returning to the airport. Emily Shelton was conducting a training flight with a student on August 4, 2026, when the aircraft developed serious engine trouble, including critically low oil pressure and oil fumes inside the cockpit. Realising the plane could not safely continue, Shelton declared an emergency and calmly guided the aircraft onto the interstate, narrowly missing moving traffic and an overhead road sign.
The dramatic landing ended without injuries and later went viral after Shelton jokingly apologised to drivers on TikTok, writing, "My fault for the traffic guys."Shelton was flying a Piper PA-28 during what was reportedly her student's first flying lesson when the aircraft began showing signs of a serious mechanical problem. Air traffic control recordings revealed that the engine's oil pressure had fallen to critically low levels while oil fumes entered the cockpit, signalling the possibility of engine failure. After assessing the situation, Shelton informed controllers that returning to the airport was no longer possible and declared an emergency. With limited options available, she identified a stretch of Interstate 10 as the safest place to land and carefully manoeuvred the aircraft between moving vehicles before bringing it to a controlled stop.Videos recorded by motorists showed the aircraft descending onto the busy interstate while narrowly clearing an overhead highway sign and avoiding nearby vehicles.
Despite the heavy traffic, Shelton maintained control throughout the approach and landed the plane smoothly without colliding with any cars. The successful landing quickly drew praise from drivers, aviation enthusiasts and experienced pilots, many of whom described it as an extraordinary display of skill and composure under immense pressure.Shelton, a certified flight instructor with more than 1,300 hours of flying experience, later said that her training had prepared her for situations like this. Aviation experts echoed that sentiment, noting that her calm communication with air traffic controllers, disciplined decision-making and ability to maintain control of the aircraft reflected the importance of rigorous emergency training. While many on social media called the landing a miracle, pilots pointed out that such outcomes are made possible through preparation and experience. After the ordeal, Shelton shared a light-hearted TikTok featuring the aircraft parked on Interstate 10 with the caption, "My fault for the traffic guys." The post quickly gained widespread attention, with thousands praising her professionalism as well as her sense of humour after such a frightening experience.
