The A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation (Lepakshi) has assigned QR codes to the wide variety of handicrafts made in Andhra Pradesh. It is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country taken up on an the advice of Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, according to an official release. The QR code system is aimed at bringing international recognition to Andhra Pradesh’s handicrafts, and it will make full details of every artefact and art form, duly including information about the artisans, the item’s history, cultural significance, raw materials used, manufacturing time, dimensions etc., available to the buyers.
Whether the product has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag or One District-One Product (ODOP) recognition can also be known. To start with, officials have given QR codes to eight iconic handicraft products that symbolise the rich culture and traditions of the State. These include, ‘Bobbili Ekanda Veena’ by Bonumaddi Murali, Kalamkari paintings of ‘Mahabharatam’, ‘Sri Krishna Leela’ and ‘Sampurna Ramayanam’ by C.
Subramanyam, and ‘Matsyavataram’ by M. Viswanatha Reddy, wooden carvings of ‘The Hands Behind The Craft’ and ‘Jatayu Saving Sita from Ravana’ by by Morasa Vamsi Krishna, and ‘Savara Adivasi painting’ by Savara Raju. Steps
have been initiated to expand this system to all handicraft products and artisan clusters across the State. The initiative helps in curbing counterfeit products, and earning international acclaim for the products, the release stated.
