AI-generated image used for representation The Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged assault on an eight-year-old Dalit student by a teacher at a government primary school in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district. According to the NHRC, the Class 4 student was allegedly beaten and subjected to casteist slurs after he drank water from the teacher’s bottle at the school in Ukawal village.
As per officials, the incident took place on July 28, when the teacher, identified as Lokesh Sharma, allegedly thrashed the student with a cane in front of his classmates. The child later informed his parents about the incident. Taking note of the reports, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh and the Superintendent of Police, Shivpuri, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The NHRC has also directed the authorities to specify whether the victim has been provided the statutory relief available under the law. What’s The Case? The case relates to an incident reported on July 28 at a government primary school in Ukawal village under the Kolaras police station area in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district.
According to officials, an eight-year-old Class 4 student belonging to the Dalit community was allegedly beaten with a cane by his teacher, Lokesh Sharma, after he drank water from the teacher’s bottle. The teacher also allegedly hurled casteist slurs at the child in front of his classmates. The boy later narrated the incident to his parents, following which the matter came to light. The allegations prompted the Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take suo motu cognisance and seek a detailed report from the Madhya Pradesh government.
