Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the BJP government could not stop him from raising students' voices after permission for his 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' event in Prayagraj was revoked by the venue provider. The programme is scheduled for August 8 at KP Ground. Gandhi said the students of Allahabad University were fighting for their future against fee hikes and seat cuts, and alleged that the administration was acting against them instead of hearing them out. The cancellation came after the Kayastha Pathshala Trust withdrew permission for the event, citing an Allahabad High Court order and waterlogging at the ground. He alleged that the PM Modi government followed a policy of suppressing the voice of the youth.
"Ask a question and you get a lathi charge, protest and you face cases, and raise your voice and you get pellet guns," Gandhi said. He also said, "Ever since I decided to come to Prayagraj to hear the students' issues, the administration has been trying every possible way to stop my programme." Gandhi added that it was clear they were "even afraid of 'Chhatron ki Goonj'" and asserted, "I stand with the students. No matter how hard the government tries, it cannot stop me from raising their voice." Kayastha Pathshala Trust acting president Jitendra Nath Chaudhary told PTI that an Allahabad High Court order dated August 14, 2025, had directed that the KP College ground should not be used for purposes other than sports and educational activities.
He said the ground was also waterlogged after rain and was unsafe for a public event. Chaudhary said the permission granted to the Congress was conditional upon approval from the district magistrate. Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was scheduled to interact with students on alleged paper leaks and other matters affecting them at the gathering. On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai visited Prayagraj to review preparations for the event and said Gandhi would come to the city on August 8 and interact with students despite the KP Trust revoking permission for the venue. The development has put the focus on Gandhi's planned student outreach in Prayagraj, with the Congress maintaining that he will go ahead with the August 8 visit even after the venue permission was withdrawn.
