(Photo: AFP) Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal was on Thursday sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Bombay High Court after being convicted in the 2013 sexual assault case involving a junior colleague. The sentence came after the high court overturned Tejpal’s 2021 acquittal by a Goa trial court, holding him guilty of sexually assaulting the woman in a hotel elevator during the Tehelka ThinkFest event in Goa in November 2013.
During the sentencing hearing, Tejpal had sought leniency, citing his age and family circumstances. “I have a wife. I am 62 years old," he told the court, urging it to take a compassionate view while deciding the quantum of punishment. Outside the courtroom following his conviction, Tejpal maintained his innocence and vowed to challenge the verdict. “This is a wrong case against me. We will fight back and I have faith in the judiciary," he said. Claiming there was overwhelming evidence in his favour, he added, “There is so much evidence that I can be acquitted 10 times." Case Background The case stems from allegations that Tejpal sexually assaulted a junior colleague inside an elevator at a luxury hotel in Goa during the Tehelka ThinkFest in November 2013.
He was acquitted by a Goa sessions court in May 2021 after the trial judge cited inconsistencies in the complainant’s testimony and extended him the benefit of doubt. The Goa government challenged that verdict before the Bombay High Court, which set aside the acquittal on Thursday.
