Sunjay Kapur Assets Case: The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed hope that the ongoing dispute between late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur and wife, Priya Kapur, over his estate and family trust can be resolved amicably, saying the ongoing mediation process is proceeding “quite satisfactorily". A bench of Jsutice JB Pardiwala said it was “very much hopeful" that the parties could reach an amicable solution and urged them to make efforts to settle the matter through mediation. It also allowed the mediation process between Rani Kapur and Priya Kapur to continue until November 2. The top court also directed that the mediator’s fees be paid from the RK Family Trust. “If mediation fails, we will allow both parties to proceed in accordance with the law, but let that day not come," Justice Pardiwala said as quoted by Bar and Bench.

Earlier in May, the Suprem Court appointed former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as mediator to help resolve the dispute over the Rs 30,000 crore worth assets of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, who died in London in June last year. The court had earlier asked the family members, including Sunjay Kapur’s children from his earlier marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, to participate in the mediation with an open mind. The legal proceedings over control of the estate and assets are pending before the Delhi High Court and the petition before the top court seeks a status quo on alienation of all the properties of the trust. The High Court had ordered the freezing of foreign bank accounts linked to the late industrialist, while granting interim protection over his estate. The High Court, while allowing an interim injunction petition, also restrained the operation of cryptocurrency holdings and directed that the Rs 30,000 crore worth assets of Kapur, be preserved. The High Court had also ordered status quo on Kapur’s assets and restrained the creation of any third-party rights. It also directed the parties to file detailed account statements before the court.
