(Image: PTI) Ujjain, home to the revered Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and one of India’s biggest pilgrimage centres, is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with the Centre moving ahead for an airport in the town. This is also Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s constituency. An Airports Authority of India (AAI) document now details the detailed design for the construction of a new domestic terminal building at Ujjain along with an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and other supporting infrastructure, signalling a significant push to improve air connectivity to the temple city. Ujjain so far does not have scheduled commercial passenger flights. The existing Ujjain airfield is a small airport with limited infrastructure and is not served by regular airlines.

It is expected to strengthen connectivity to one of the country’s most important religious destinations while giving a major development boost to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s home district. Yadav represents the Ujjain South Assembly constituency and has repeatedly spoken about transforming Ujjain into a world-class spiritual and tourism hub. The airport project aligns with that vision and adds to the investments already made in the Mahakal Lok corridor and the city’s urban infrastructure, officials say. For years, Ujjain has relied largely on Indore Airport, nearly 55 kilometres away, for air connectivity despite attracting millions of devotees every year to the Mahakaleshwar Temple. The dependence on road travel from Indore has often proved challenging, particularly during peak pilgrimage seasons such as Mahashivratri and the Simhastha Kumbh, when the city witnesses an enormous influx of visitors. A modern airport in Ujjain is expected to make travel easier for pilgrims, tourists and business travellers alike while reducing pressure on Indore.
