Who's Dead, Jailed Or Still Missing Published By, Last Updated: August 06, 2026, 13:19 IST Three years after gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed was shot dead, a look at where each family member stands today — those killed, jailed, absconding, or freed. More than three years after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj, the fallout for their family continues. Fresh tragedy struck this week with the death of Atiq’s youngest son Abaan in a road accident, even as three women linked to the family remain absconding despite a nationwide manhunt. The family’s decline traces back to the February 2023 murder of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police guards in Prayagraj’s Dhumanganj area, a killing police allege Atiq orchestrated from Sabarmati Jail. In the years since, the family named in the case has been scattered — some killed, some imprisoned, some still untraceable. Here is where each member currently stands. Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range in front of media on April 15, 2023, while being escorted by police for a medical checkup in Prayagraj; the assailants surrendered on the spot. Two days earlier, Atiq’s third son Asad was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi along with associate Ghulam. Most recently, on August 6, 2026, the youngest son, Abaan, died in a road accident in Jhansi after the car he was travelling in — reportedly at high speed — hit a divider; his friend Sonu also died. Abaan had reportedly been living outside prison and pursuing his studies at the time, and was said to be travelling to meet his jailed brother. Who Is In Jail? Atiq’s two eldest sons, Mohammad Umar and Mohammad Ali, remain lodged in jail in separate criminal cases — Umar in Lucknow, and Ali in Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj, according to earlier reports. Who Was A Minor At The Time, And What Happened To Them? Ahzam and Abaan, minors when the Umesh Pal case broke, were placed in a child protection home in Prayagraj in March 2023 after being found “roaming aimlessly" following the murder, police had said at the time. Both were accused of conspiracy in the case. In October 2023, following a Supreme Court directive, the Child Welfare Committee released both to a family member — reported as their aunt — after they indicated they did not wish to remain in the childcare institution.
