According to the Congress party, it had obtained prior permission to hold the event and paid an advance amount worth Rs 51,000. Documents accessed by The Indian Express revealed that the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress, through a letter dated July 30, had sought a reservation of the Chaudhary Nehal Singh Cricket Academy ground from August 4 to August 8 for the event.
Rahul Gandhi, an MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Raibareli, was scheduled to hold the interaction on August 8. Handwritten approvals on the application suggest that the party was granted permission for five days to establish and dismantle the pandal. A receipt, accessed by The Indian Express, also showed the organisation had received a sum of Rs 51,000 from the Congress for the booking. Permission Withdrawn Just days ahead of the scheduled event, the Kayastha Pathshala (KP) Trust on Wednesday, August 5, withdrew the permission. Citing an Allahabad High Court (HC) order that academic activities should not be affected, it said the proposed programme could disrupt students of two educational institutions. Further, the trust said the monsoon could damage the ground, adding its restoration would take several days. It urged the Congress to hold the event after the monsoon season or during vacations while also promising that the advance amount would be refunded. In a post on ‘X’, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) chief Ajay Rai alleged that “futile attempts" to halt Gandhi’s earlier events in Kota and Dehradun were made by the respective Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments.
